Chapter 31

Alex

She’s been missing for two fucking days. Two fucking miserable days.

When I didn’t hear anymore from her that night, I figured she had fallen asleep. It wasn’t until the following morning when her mom called both Lydia and me, that I found out Chloe had gone missing. I’ve been sick to my stomach ever since.

I bring the lit blunt to my lips, taking a hit in hopes of feeling at least a little calmer. No surprise, it doesn’t work.

Nothing’s worked.

I know I won’t feel better until she’s home safe and sound.

A knock on my door grabs my attention. I blow the smoke out of my window and put the blunt out before walking over to the door. When I open it, I’m face to face with Lydia and I can tell by the redness on her face she’s been crying.

“Can I talk to you?” Her voice rasps.

Stepping aside, I let her into the room. “Of course.”

“Alex.” I can tell she’s holding back tears as I close the door and give her my attention. “I’m scared. What happens if she doesn’t come home?”

That’s a thought I refuse to entertain. She will come home… She has to.

“Lyd, it’s going to be fine.” I try to be reassuring, but even I can tell that I sound like I’m full of shit.

Lydia glances down to the ground, shifting uncomfortably as she refuses to look at me. “Alex, did something happen to her because she’s involved with you?”

My stomach churns and I feel sick. It’s a thought I’ve had since I found out she was missing. Chloe doesn’t have any enemies here that would want to attack her. The only reason that makes sense for all of this is because of me.

“I’m looking into that,” I answer her honestly.

After hearing about her abduction, I had no choice but to go to Johnny. I can’t exactly open up to the cops about what I do and why I think she could have been taken. That’ll just get my ass locked up and then I’ll be no help getting her back home.

“Lydia.” I say her name, causing her to look up from the ground. “She will come home and she’ll be safe, especially if it’s because of me. I will do anything and everything I have to do to make sure she does.”

“Okay.” She responds as she continues to fight back her emotions. “My mom was going to take her parents some dinner. Are you coming?”

“No.” I shake my head. “But send them my regards please.”

I’ve been avoiding her dad who flew in after getting news that she was taken because I haven’t wanted to meet him with a guilty conscience. As for Danielle, the poor woman has been through a lot in the past forty-eight hours. I’ve been over to check on her and I can tell she’s a mess, though she tries to hold it together. I can see that this is breaking her and the longer Chloe is gone, the more damaged she’s becoming.
